I do not follow any sect of Islam. I am neither shia nor sunni. I am a Muslim. Dividing our ummah into different sects is Haram. We all are one. There is only one Islam. “Indeed, those who have divided their religion and become sects – you, [O Muhammad], are not [associated] with them in anything. Their affair is only [left] to Allah; then He will inform them about what they used to do.” Quran 6:159 Different Muslims may have different views regarding same religious matter. They may follow religion differently as per their understanding. But we should not label each other as sunni or shia. “Ironically, they broke up into sects only after the knowledge had come to them, due to jealousy and resentment among themselves. If it were not for a predetermined decision from your Lord to respite them for a definite interim, they would have been judged immediately. Indeed, the later generations who inherited the scripture are full of doubts.” Quran 42:14 As human beings, we won’t do everything perfectly. We can not follow islam perfectly. We will make mistakes. Your version of Islam can be different from others. Do not hate each other for that. Don’t be divided. Try to guide each other instead. As long as our intentions are good and we ask for forgiveness, everything is fine. Division is sign of hatred and unity is sign of love. Islam is religion of love and peace. Even if I was, my own views could not be taken as representative of that entire category; however, perhaps, my own perspective could shed some light. From what I’ve read about the Ayatollah’s personal life, I can only hope to match his levels of piety and knowledge. That’s all I have to say about him as a person. That leaves the legacy he left as a leader. Put simply, I think the Islamic Revolution was the natural outcome of decades of exploitation by the Untied States (which just so happens to be my nationality) against Iran. In that sense, many Pakistanis would admire him since they see the US as having played a similar role in their history. All that one needs to do is read about the US’ support of General Zia ul-Haq in the 1980s to get an idea of how the United States helped lay the groundwork for the current socio-political climate in Pakistan. This is an issue that transcends Sunni-Shi’a divisions. That said, I cannot support everything that he did as leader of Iran. For example, his sanctioning of the taking of American hostages is simply indefensible. Also, his fatwa against Salman Rushdie for his authorship of The Satanic Verses did a lot to harm Islam’s reputation in the West. I understood why he undertook such actions given the track record of the United States and the West in general; nevertheless, I cannot support them. I admire Ayatollah Khomeini as a religious scholar and a pious man but think that many of his actions as the Leader of Iran were reactionary and ended up doing harm to Muslims globally.
